Southern Ghana: Accra and Coastal Areas

Accra's Tropical Climate: The capital city experiences two primary seasons: the dry season (November to March) and the wet season (May to June).

  • Peak Season: November to February offers ideal conditions for outdoor activities and tourism, with temperatures hovering around 30°C (86°F) and little to no rainfall.

  • Off-Peak Season: In May and June, tropical rain falls - typically heavy, but lasting a short time - and humidity increases. The rainy season rejuvenates the lakes, rivers and waterfalls, to their most impressive appearance, making this the ideal time for those in search of water-based activities.

Note: The Harmattan, a dry and dusty wind, blows from the Sahara Desert between December and February. It can provide some much needed reprieve from the hot, African sun, however, as the locals do - be sure to travel with lip balm and Shea butter to protect yourself from dry skin and chapped lips. Besides being slightly uncomfortable on the skin and throat, this weather shouldn’t get in the way of any Detty December activities.

Central Region: Rainforest Paradise

Moving inland from the coast, Ghana's landscape transforms into dense tropical rainforests. These forests, such as the famous Kakum National Park, are characterised by high levels of rainfall and humidity, fostering a rich biodiversity. The days are hotter than by the coast, but not as hot as in the North Savannahs, however at night temperatures can fall as low as 10°C.

  • Best Time to Visit: While the region experiences rain year-round, the short dry spells between March and April, and September to November offer slightly drier conditions for exploring the rainforest.

Northern Ghana: Savannah Adventures

As one travels further north, the terrain shifts to vast savannahs. Northern Ghana showcases a distinct contrast between the wet (April to October) and dry (November to March) seasons.

  • Dry Season : During the dry season here temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F). The December Harmattan is also more intense and brings with it the best season for wildlife viewing in the savannahs, such as Mole National Park, as animals congregate at the more scarcely available watering holes.

  • Wet Season : The region experiences heavy rainfall and sporadic thunderstorms, making outdoor activities challenging. However, the lush greenery creates a stunning landscape.

Climate Change Concerns:

Like many regions across the globe, Ghana is not immune to the impacts of climate change. Be prepared for potential variations in temperature and rainfall.

By understanding Ghana's diverse climate, you can optimize your travel plans and make the most of your adventure.

Summary:

  • Best time for outdoor activities: November to March, Southern region

  • Best time for water-based activities: May to October, Central Region

  • Best time for wildlife viewing: December, Northern Region
